Picasso Museum in Barcelona
The Picasso Museum in Barcelona was opened in 1963. The collection of works presented at the museum was given by Pablo’s friend and secretary Jaime Sabartés. It is one of two largest museums of Pablo Picasso, the second one is located in Paris. The art gallery in the Spanish capital is very popular among art connoisseurs; it annually welcomes about one million visitors.
Over 3500 works created by Picasso are presented in the halls of the few old palaces on Montcada Street. The most valuable paintings kept in the gallery are Science and Charity and The First Communion. At the museum, you can see mainly early work of Pablo Picasso. However, you can find there his later works including a series of paintings Las Meninas, an interpretation of Las Meninas by Velasquez. The works are presented in the chronological order, which allows tracing stages of the development of the artist's unique style, which brought him world fame.
One of the palaces where paintings are presented is an old mansion of the 15th century. This place is of particular interest. It looks like a museum in the museum, where the great art of painting and ancient architecture of the medieval Spain are perfectly combined.
The museum is open daily, except Monday, from 9am to 7pm. Entry ticket to the main exhibition costs about 11 euros. You can get to the museum by metro: L4 to Jaume I Station, L3 to Liceu Station, L2 to Arc de Triomf Station. You can also take a bus: No 39 or 51 – Passeig Picasso Stop, No17, 19, 40 or 45 – Via Laietana Stop.
