El-Call. Jewish quarter in Girona
In the Spanish city of Girona has an old quarter El Kal, which is considered one of the major local attractions.
Quarter in Girona appeared many centuries ago, when several Jewish families settled near the present cathedral in the old town. People who lived here were very wealthy and were members of the urban intelligentsia.
In the 15th century, as a result of oppression on religious grounds, Spain abandoned all adherents of Judaism. The Jewish quarter was inhabited by poor families of Christians who have not been able to rebuild their homes, so all the buildings are well preserved to our days.
Today afford accommodation in the historic quarter are only very wealthy people. Outlandish narrow streets, more similar to a maze full of dead ends, stairways and arches. The building of the former synagogue is now the Museum of Jewish history. Among the old houses are located art galleries, boutiques and restaurants.
